Changes made to Civil Service Exam Pattern from 2013

Changes made to Civil Service Exam Pattern from 2013

UPSC has finally taken a decision and issued notification with the changes made to the examination.  Till now there was much importance to the optional subjects in civil services examination.  The candidates used to appear for the exam with two optional, each for 600 marks.  Candidate’s scoring in these two options used to be given 60 percent weightage.  But according to the new changes, there will be only one optional for 500 marks.

Another important change made by UPSC is regarding literature as optional subject for civil service examination.  Earlier any candidate was able to take English or Telugu literature as optional for civil services exam irrespective of his subject in graduation.  But now only those who studies literature in graduation will be allowed to take it as optional for civil service exam.  General studies are given much importance now.  The candidates will have to write four general papers each of 250 marks.

Earlier General Studies paper used to carry only 600 marks.  But now 1000 marks are allotted for General Studies.  This decision was taken to improve the knowledge and awareness of candidates in current affairs.

English exam in Civils main used to test the basic knowledge of candidates in this subject.  Candidates were supposed to get pass marks in this subject and these marks were not given much importance.  This system is also changed now.  English paper will be for 100 marks now and the marks secured in this subject will also be considered.  It is a truth that most of the candidates who are selected for civils do not have good knowledge of English.  But most people are of the opinion that this will affect the chances of candidates who comes from rural areas.  Another important change that should be noted is UPSC will now conduct separate exams for Civil Services and Indian Forest Service.
